So, you want to start a blog.
Before starting this long post, I want to make a thing clear that this post isn’t for hobby bloggers. I’m writing this post for them who want to start a blog and build a successful blogging business. However, hobby boogers can also be benefitted from this post.
If you want to start a blog, you can do that as you want. But I want you to do this in the right way. That’s the reason I’m writing this post.
If you want to start any business successfully, you have to go through the following four stages –
- Launching, and
Blogging business is no different. When you want to start a blogging business, you must go through these four stages.
Stage-1: Preparation for Start Blogging
Suppose you want to open a shop. First of all, you need to know about the shop business. Then you need to ask yourself – do you really have the mindset to run the business?
There may come many obstacles to run your business. Do you have the mind power to overcome those obstacles?
If you really want to open a shop business and really dedicated to run the business then you should plan to open the business.
Similarly, when you want to start a blogging business, you need to be well prepared. You need to know about blogging and get the right blogging mindsets.
So, I’ll discuss these two topics in this stage. Those are –
- What is a blog, and
- Getting the right blogging mindsets
1. What is a Blog?
As you are here, I think, you already know about the blog.
However, without describing what a blog is, this guide will remain incomplete.
A blog is your personal online space where you can share your ideas and knowledge with the world.
While sharing your ideas and knowledge, you can monetize your blog in many ways. That is, you can make money blogging.

As building a blogging business requires the right approaches, you need to get the right blogging mindset even before starting your blog.
2. Getting The Right Blogging Mindsets
Most of the bloggers fail in their first year of blogging. It isn’t because they are lack of knowledge. It’s because they don’t have the right blogging mindsets.
Blogging world is constantly changing. What’s been proven strategies for years don’t even work for blogging nowadays. What is working nowadays may not work after years.
To constantly evolving with the ever-changing blogging world you need to develop the right blogging mindsets.
Stage-2: Planning to Start a Blogging Business
Let’s go back to our shop business. When you’re prepared to start your shop business, now it is time to plan,
What things you’ll require to start your shop business?
What kind of shop business you’ll start?
In which shopping mall, you’ll open your business?
How to rent the shop space? Etc.
Similarly, when you are prepared to start your blogging business, you need to plan all these things in terms of blogging.
So, I’ll discuss the following topics in this stage to plan your blogging business properly.
- Things required to start blogging
- Choosing your blog topic
- Choosing your blog domain
- Starting the blog on the right platform
1. Things Required to Start Blogging
Virtually you don’t need anything rather than a computer and an internet connection.
But you need things without which you won’t be able to start and build a successful blogging business. That is, willingness to learn.
To be a successful blogger, you need to constantly learn new things every day.
So, if we summarise the required things to start a blog, they are –
- A computer
- An internet connection, and
- Willingness to learn
If you have those three things, you’re good to go.
2. Selecting Your Blog Topic
The first practical step to start a blog is to choose your blog topic.
Blog topic is a subject that you’ll write about on your blog.
You can blog about everything and anything. But choosing a specific subject to blog about often works.
Keep in mind that your blog isn’t an online magazine. So, you just can’t write about anything.
If you want to gain traction and want to be successful in blogging, you should choose a very specific subject. This specific subject is called blogging niche.
There are many things to be considered when choosing a blogging niche. The most important things are –
- Choose a Blog Niche That Interest You Most
Newbie bloggers often make this mistake. They try to choose a niche that someone found success on. I should say, this is a big mistake.
No matter, how successful someone is, if you don’t have any interest in that niche, you’ll fail to write amazing content.
So, choose a niche that interests you most.
- Choose a Niche That You Can Write About For Long
No matter you are expert on your niche or not, your blog niche should be something that you can write about for long.
It is possible if you are an expert or if you are interested in that niche.
If you are an expert, I don’t have anything to say. You are already capable to write for long.
If you are not an expert, you must have an interest in the subject. If you have an interest, you definitely will find your way to learn about the topic.
So, we can say that to blog about any niche you don’t have to be an expert on that niche.
- Choose a Niche That Solves Readers’ Problem
People search online to get the solution to their problems. Your blog niche should be something that solves any of your readers’ problems.
If you have these things in mind when you are choosing your blog topic then you are good to go.

3. Choosing Your Blog Domain
A domain is a virtual address of your blog. Anything you publish on your blog will be found under this address.
Although both are the same thing, there is a difference between a domain name and a blog address.
For example, “SharpBlogger” is the domain name of this blog. But the address of this blog is “http:// sharpblogger. com”.
A Domain name is the brand identity of your blog. So, when buying try to select a sweet and short name which resonate with your blog topic.
4. Start Your Blog on The Right Platform – The Self-Hosted WordPress Blogging Platform
There are many blogging platforms. As you want to start a profitable blog, you need to choose the right blogging platform from the beginning.
If you start your blog on a wrong platform, you may wish to transfer your blog to the right platform later. That is a big hassle and you’ll need to spend your valuable time for that which you can invest to build your blog.
So, it is best to start your blog on the right blogging platform from the beginning.
If you research, you’ll find that the best blogging platform is the self-hosted WordPress blogging platform.
The reason is obvious. WordPress is the most customizable and almost all successful bloggers hosted their blog on self-hosted WordPress blogging platform.
Don’t be confused. WordPress blogging platform is two types. One is hosted and another is self-hosted. I’m talking about Self-hosted WordPress blogging platform.
To start a self-hosted WordPress blog, you need to buy server space from a hosting service provider.
After buying a hosting plan, the first thing you need to do is to install WordPress on your hosting server.
You don’t have to be a techy guy to install WordPress. It’s a matter of a few mouse clicks.
I’ve talked about this before in this post.
Stage-3: Launching Your Blogging Business
So far, you’ve done almost 50% work for starting your business.
You have rented a shop.
You have selected the type of business. That is which product you’ll sell in your shop.
Now it’s time to work inside your shop for opening that.
You need to decorate your shop.
You need to set up showcases for displaying products.
You need to install lighting arrangements, etc.
Similarly, in your blogging business, you need to do the following things –
- Setting up your blog
- Building your online profiles
1. Setting Up Your Blog
After installing WordPress on your hosting server, the first step is to set up your WordPress blog. Read the post “most essential wordpress setting after installing”.
After setting up your WordPress dashboard, you may want to install a theme for your blog.
Installing WordPress Theme
WordPress themes are the showcase of your blog. It defines how your blog will look online.
You’ll find many free WordPress themes online. There are also many high-quality premium WordPress themes available in the market.
If you’re just starting and don’t have a budget for buying premium WordPress themes, I’ll recommend installing free WordPress themes.
Once you start to earn money from your blog, you can change the theme.
If you have a budget and want to get a premium WordPress theme, I would recommend getting “Genesis” WordPress theme. These are popular and high-quality WordPress themes. More than that Genesis themes are highly customizable.
Installing WordPress theme on your blog is easy. Read the post “How to Install a WordPress Theme Easily”.
Installing WordPress Plugin
Plugins are small software which extends the functionality of WordPress.
Installing too many plugins can slow down your blog which will harm your blog in terms of SEO. So, it is a good strategy to install as fewer plugins as possible.
But, without plugins, it’s almost impossible to use WordPress effectively. For a new blog, I’ll recommend these Must have WordPress plugins for your new blog.
At this point, you’re now good to go. But you need to learn some basic WordPress things for your day to day blogging activities.
WordPress is a huge thing. But you don’t have to learn all the things. You just need to know about some basic WordPress things. Such as basic theme customization, creating blog pages and publishing post, etc.
Don’t worry. Those things aren’t hard to learn. You can even learn these within hours. You may need to learn some other WordPress things later which you’ll be able to learn as you go.
These things hold many back from start blogging. But, believe me, you don’t have to be a techy guy for blogging effectively.
The following things you need to learn initially for your day to day blogging activities.
2. Build Your Online Profiles
To build a successful blog you need to have a regular online presence. It is the only way to get traffic and build a blog readership.
So you need to have branded online profiles. In the future, you’ll need to have a strong online presence to build your blog readership.
To build your online profile, you need to create profiles on all social media platforms.
When creating profiles on various social media sites, keep in mind that your profile should be aligned with your blog brand.
At this point, you don’t know much about your blog brand. You just know about your domain name or blog name.
Someone may like to keep their blog name as their domain name. Someone may prefer blog name is separated from his domain name. Whichever you choose as your blog name, it isn’t a big thing.
The thing is, you should have your blog name which is also your business name. And your business name is the identity of your blog. You’ll use your business name as your brand name.
To build your branded online profiles, you need to hold your brand name in all social media sites. Otherwise, there is a possibility to hold your brand name by someone.
So, it is a nice thing to have your blog name in all the social media sites.
As soon as starting your blog, just create your blog’s online profiles on all the social media sites using your brand name.
The major social media sites to start with are –
Stage-4: Running Your Business
This stage is a continuous process of any business. You need to continuously run and build your business.
You have to define your own strategy to make your business successful.
Blogging business is no different. You have to constantly create contents.
You have to define your marketing strategy.
You have to find your way to monetize your blog.
But, the first thing you need to successfully run your blogging business is to create contents and build your blog community.
In this stage, you actually need to focus on creating contents. So let’s discuss the topic…
Start Creating Content
As you launched your blog, now It’s time for creating contents.
Write at least ten posts before making your blog live online.
This is not a must-follow rule. But, it is a good idea to have some posts on your blog at the time of publishing. So that, visitors don’t feel that they are visiting an empty blog.
If you don’t have posts ready to publish, don’t worry. You can publish your blog online and then start creating contents.
To have everything organized and save you from many hassles later, try to create your own content strategy.
Define Blog Categories And Tags
The strategy behind this is simple. You just need to divide your blogging niche into four-five sub-niche which we call category.
If you can categorize your blog topic, it’ll be much easier for you to create contents.
Start writing blog posts for every category.
You can further divide your blog categories which you can use as tags in your blog post.
I’ve talked about this in the post “Best Practice to Use Tags for Your Blog Posts”
Now the question is how many posts you should publish daily or weekly or monthly.
How Many Posts Should You Publish on Your Blog on a Time Basis?
The answer is it depends. It depends on your available time and effort.
You may want to publish three posts in a week at the beginning of your blogging journey. It is because you want to have some posts on your blog. So that, when someone visits your blog doesn’t feel that your blog is empty.
But I found publishing a post in a week is pretty good. Because you have many other blogging tasks at the beginning. You also need to keep some time to learn to blog. Considering all these things, it is pretty standard to publish a post in a week.
Another question which will come to your mind at the beginning is that how long a blog post should be.
How Long Should Your Blog Post Be?
It is said that the long form of contents performs well in terms of SEO. But it is also true that long contents can scare your readers. I personally enjoy the short form of content.
Keep in mind that the online world is very distracting. People seem in a hurry when browsing online. So, why unnecessarily make your content long by putting just unnecessary words!
In my case, I just want to make my message clear in a blog post. No matter, how many words it takes to make my message clear in a blog post.
You can write a 300 words blog post. But 800 words posts are pretty standard.
My mission is to eliminate blogging overwhelm. Most of you may want to be a blogger. But, due to the overwhelming blogging information, you may not start your blog or quit blogging too early without even giving it room to grow.
But blogging isn’t hard. The hardest thing is to start your first blog. Once you can start your blog the right way, you’ll find your way to be successful.
The wonderful thing about blogging business is, you’ll find many blogging friends to help you whenever you’re stuck. There are many forums, groups, and communities available online where bloggers gather together to help each other.
Blogging isn’t easy too. If It is, everyone would be a successful blogger.
You have to do works, devote your relaxing moments and constantly give efforts to build your blogging business.
Most of all, you have to start your blog the right way, if you want to build a profitable blogging business within the shortest time possible.
The right way to start a profitable blog is,
- Develop a business mentality from the beginning
- Choose the right blogging niche
- Build your blog on self-hosted WordPress blogging platform
