If you are a hobby blogger I have nothing to say. You can rely on free blogging platforms. But if you are really dedicated to blogging and want to make money blogging then I recommend starting your blogging journey on self-hosted WordPress blog.
Why Should You Choose Self-Hosted WordPress Blogging Platform
There are many blogging platforms. But, I recommend relying on self-hosted WordPress blogging platform. The reasons are –

When you decide to start your blogging journey on self-hosted WordPress blogging platform, the things will come to your mind first are, where should you buy hosting and domain from? Which hosting company should you choose? Which hosting package should you buy?
As a beginner, when I decided to migrate from Blogger to self-hosted WordPress blogging platform, these questions really annoyed me a lot. But you don’t worry. I’ll make it clear to you in this post.
Let’s first see, what you’ll need to start a self-hosted WordPress blog.
To start a self-hosted WordPress blog, you need to buy a Domain name and a Hosting package. Some hosting company like Bluehost offers a free domain with their hosting package. In that case, you don’t have to buy a Domain.
But, but I bought my blog’s domain name from GoDaddy. There isn’t any issue involved in buying a domain and hosting from separate companies.
When it comes to buying hosting package, I extremely recommend going with Bluehost (referral link).
Reasons to Start Your WordPress Blog on Bluehost Hosting
There are many hosting providers available on the market. Different companies offer different hosting packages. As a beginner, it is really tough to choose right hosting provider and the right hosting package for your blog. And choosing wrong hosting provider can harm your blogging business. So, choosing right hosting provider is really important for your blogging success.
I know this. Because I was there.
I always recommend choosing shared web hosting for a new blog. And Bluehost is my number one choice as a hosting provider. Because –
- Bluehost is a reliable hosting provider and trusted by two million people.
- It is a recommended hosting provider by WordPress itself.
- 24 hours customer service.
- Free SSL certificate.
- Money back guarantees within one month (You can claim your money back within one month if you are not satisfied. I don’t know anyone did this.)
- Cheap web hosting provider.

How to Start a WordPress Blog on Bluehost Hosting
There are many hosting service providers and many cheap as well as expensive hosting package available on the web. From them, choosing a right one for your new blog is really difficult if you don’t have any guideline.
For a new blog, you don’t need many resources, as your blog don’t have much traffic now. So, you should host your blog on shared web hosting.
To start your own WordPress blog on shared web hosting from Bluehost, follow the steps below –
Step 1: Choose a Hosting Plan
Bluehost has three shared web hosting plan – Basic, Plus, and Prime.
You can buy any of the packages. But, I recommend buying “Plus” hosting package so that you can host another Domain if you want. In a basic plan, you can only host one website. In the rest of the two plans, you can host unlimited website.
In some point you may want to host another website, that is the reason I recommend the plus hosting plan. You’ll also get 200$ marketing offer with Plus and Prime Plan, which is not included in the Basic plan.
If you are on tight budget, you can go with the Basic hosting plan. There is nothing wrong with this plan. If you want to upgrade your plan, you can do that later.
To buy your hosting package open up Bluehost in a new window and follow along.
In the opened window, the first thing you need to do is to click on the green “get started now” button.
Once you’ve clicked on the button, it will take you to the hosting package page where you can see the difference among all three hosting packages.
Click the select button on your chosen plan.
Step 2: Choose a Domain Name
On the next screen, you can choose a new domain or you can use your existing one. If you already have a domain, put it in the right side’s field. Or you can get your new domain on the left side’s box.
Don’t worry, you can host another domain with the help of Addon feature later.
When choosing your blog’s domain, you have to be strategic. So that you won’t curse yourself later. Read the post “Tips to Choose a Domain name for Your blog”.
Step 3: Filing Account info
On the next screen, you’ll be given a blank form to fill up.
Fill up the form with the information.
On the same screen, you need to choose your hosting package duration. You need to buy hosting for at least one year. Bluehost doesn’t support monthly bill payment.
I’ll recommend choosing at least three years plan. So that you don’t have to worry about hosting payment and can focus on building your blogging business. If you don’t have enough budget, go for one year plan. There is no issue about that. You can increase your plan duration later.
With the hosting package, you’ll be offered some other services like Domain privacy protection, Site backup pro, etc. Although these services are helpful, you don’t require them initially. If you have a budget, I’ll recommend buying Domain privacy protection with your hosting package.
Now the most unwanted thing – Payment (lol, every business needs money to invest)
Bluehost supports Credit card, Mastercard, Discover, and Paypal.
If you don’t see Paypal option, click on the more payment option.
After choosing a payment option, accept their terms and condition by selecting the checkbox below the page and click on the submit button.
4. Installing WordPress on Bluehost Hosting
You’re now a proud owner of Bluehost hosting package and a domain. You can now access your hosting CPanel (Control Panel) with the login info sent to your email.
CPanel is something which works as a command center for your hosting. After logging in to CPanel you’ll see many icons which are linked to different services and features. Initially, these icons can make you overwhelmed. But don’t worry, you can ignore most of the icons. But this is the page where you will find an icon to install WordPress.
Now it’s time to install WordPress on your hosting.
Installing WordPress doesn’t require any technical knowledge. Bluehost provides a 1-click WordPress installation solution. You can install WordPress with a few clicks with the 1-click WordPress installation solution.
When you logged in to your hosting CPanel, WordPress will offer to install WordPress for you which will cost you money. Ignore the message. I’ll show you how you can do it yourself.
Scroll down until you find the icon named install WordPress as shown in the image below. Click on the button.
On the next screen, you’ll be given some options to fill or choose which are actually very simple.
Here you’ll type your blog name, a complex username with the combination of letter and symbol and a strong password.
Write down the username and password in somewhere in a safe place. But don’t put it online which can be vulnerable to hackers.
Congratulations. You’ve successfully installed WordPress on your Bluehost hosting account.
After successful installation, you’ll be given a unique URL to login to your WordPress dashboard which will look like “http:// yourdomain. com/wp-admin/“.
Copy the Url and bookmark it. This URL is where your WordPress dashboard is located. WordPress dashboard is the back-end of your blog where you can change your blog’s theme, install plugins, publish posts, etc.
If you have a budget to pay for at least one year hosting plan then I’ll recommend starting your own WordPress blog on Bluehost hosting.
But if you prefer to pay monthly then you can go for Hostgator which is also a reliable hosting provider.
